Arty looks for three Big wins at the Farm

Tuesday 2 August 2016, 2:16pm

Adam Wadick's sole advertisement for his stable is Big Arty - and he almost lost him.

In recent weeks Big Arty's owners have knocked back lucrative offers from Hong Kong, allowing the gelding to continue as the trainer's only horse in work.

Provided the track is not heavy, the "gentle giant" will have the chance to win three consecutive midweek races in a 1400m benchmark race on his home track at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Wadick said the horse's owners, who include rugby league great Terry Lamb, had stuck with him despite significant bids from Hong Kong.

"We had to have a good think about it because it was good money being offered," Wadick said.

"I told them that if Big Arty walks out of the stable I may as well shut down because he's going to bring me more horses hopefully."

Wadick said he was confident about Big Arty's chances on Wednesday with the gelding showing improvement since his last-start win on July 13.

Now a four-year-old, the horse goes up half a kilogram from last start to carry 60.5kg as he steps up to open company for the first time.

Wadick, 35, was an apprentice jockey in the early 2000s before becoming a track rider for some of Sydney's major stables.

"I got too heavy - ate myself out of the saddle," Wadick said.

He then turned his hand to breaking and pre-training and has held a trainer's licence for two years.

"I set up a little education stable where I used to break in and pre-train but to be honest I got sick of fixing everyone else's horses, sending them back and them getting results," Wadick said.

Big Arty gave him his first and second city wins and is the only horse on his books aside from a yearling by Choisir.

Lamb had a hand in naming Wadick's stable flag-bearer, by Excellent Art.

"One of the other owners Paul Fox came up with the name Big Arty and Terry voted for that because Artie Beetson was his favourite player," Wadick said.

The Canterbury legend and Warwick Farm trainer like others in the syndicate, forged their friendship on the Cabramatta Golf Course.

Wadick says after Wednesday the group will get a chance to see if Big Arty can win a Saturday race and a third straight win could mean he takes on Listed company.
