I Am A Star aiming for fillies' features

Sunday 31 July 2016, 1:17pm

I Am A Star has already made an impression in her juvenile season and trainer Shane Nichols is looking to her to shine during the spring.

The filly was beaten on debut at Caulfield in April before winning at Flemington and then heading to Adelaide where she won the Group Three National Stakes by three lengths in May.

Nichols, who trains at Mornington, says the filly has thickened up and he is looking forward to seeing what she can do as a three-year-old.

I Am A Star is due to trial on Wednesday and Nichols has earmarked the Group Three Quezette Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 13 for her return.

"The difficult part is that she's won an $80,000 and $120,000 race so she gets the full penalties," Nichols said.

"So she's going to get 59.5kg, I think, in the three-year-old fillies' races."

I Am A Star had a month off after her National Stakes win and the Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m) is a spring target.

"In a perfect world she'll be third-up into the Guineas Prelude and that will determine our path," Nichols said.

"If she runs a strong 1400 metres then we'll go to the Thousand Guineas. If she's suited to be sharper she'll freshen up for the fillies sprint races."

Nichols wasn't surprised I Am A Star made an impression in the latter part of her juvenile season with two wins.

"She's always shown plenty," he said.

"I always thought she was Saturday class. I didn't know she would win a stakes race by three lengths, but it probably wasn't a massively strong stakes race.

"She's just a very compliant racehorse."
