Cummings finds Spring Champion hope

Saturday 30 July 2016, 12:48pm

Golden Organic's maiden win in the Sydney's final two-year-old race of the season has trainer Anthony Cummings looking towards the Group One Spring Champion Stakes.

It was a tough performance by Golden Organic ($8), which held off a spirited challenge from High Mist ($7) by a head to deny Chris Waller one of the two wins he needed to break his own training record.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Lord Macau ($17) finished a long neck away in third in the Hyland Race Colours Handicap (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Cummings believes the gelding can be extended to the 2000m of the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick in October.

"He's still got some learning and some developing to do but he certainly does have the quality," Cummings said.

Jockey Tye Angland said the horse showed good speed from the barrier, allowing him to take up a position outside the leader Lord Macau.

"He's not a big horse but he showed a lot of courage to win that race," Angland said.

"I thought High Mist was going to pick us up 100 metres out, but he fought very deep and hard."

A $45,000 yearling, Golden Organic is sired by Dalghar, a shuttle stallion at Brighthill Farm in New Zealand.

"I've got a lot of time for his progeny," Cummings said.

Golden Organic's is the first foal out of Extra Celestial, a mare trained by Cummings.
