Slots a winner as racing career winds down

Saturday 23 July 2016, 5:17pm

While Slots' days in racing are numbered, she has shown what makes her special to trainer Grant Marshall.

Slots ($15) won a 1250m benchmark handicap at Canterbury on Saturday, edging out Powerline ($4.40), with Allez Chival ($9) third.

Bought as an unraced filly for $1700 at Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm dispersal sale, Slots has won more than $320,000 in prize money.

Marshall said the mare could have one more start before heading to the breeding barn, where she is booked with Darley stallion Shooting To Win.

"I think she's got one more in her but we'll let her tell us," Marshall said.

The Newcastle trainer took Slots to Sydney in a car-drawn float on Saturday morning, rather than the usual truck.

"She's got off the car and float and she's not had a lather of sweat," Marshall said.

"I didn't even have to hose her."

Apprentice jockey Lester Grace continued his winning association with Slots, the horse that gave him his first stakes win in the Listed Just Now Quality Handicap at Doomben in December.

Slots settled last before following $4.40 favourite Avonaco into the race and working home strongly to claim the race.

"I was back a long way but I was able to follow Hugh Bowman (on Avonaco)," Grace said.

"I was able to get off his back late and really hit the line strong."
