King's Officer in command at Canterbury

Saturday 23 July 2016, 3:06pm

Wet winter tracks and a routine of swimming have brought out the best in King's Officer, who has stretched his winning sequence to four at Canterbury.

His affection for water is somewhat surprising to trainer Terry Robinson given the gelding's early experience when he went swimming at the beach near his stable on the NSW south coast.

King's Officer was headed out to sea before eventually being coaxed back to land.

"He loves the wet tracks and he enjoys his work in the water, which is surprising given what happened to him," Robinson said.

"He has always shown ability but he has really matured now and it shows."

King's Officer was a late entry in Saturday's benchmark 85 over 1550m, 10 days after he won a 1600m midweek race at Warwick Farm.

Ridden by Tommy Berry, King's Officer ($7) came with his customary sweeping finish to beat McCreery ($6) by a long neck, with the pair well clear of third-placed Got Unders ($9).

Robinson said he was unsure where King's Officer would go next although he was tempted to give him a break.

"It was a late decision to run him today," he said.

"But he did very little between his two runs.

"He is a very good winded horse and a natural athlete but I'm just not sure whether we will go on this prep."
