Kyle Maskiell suspended at Valley

Thursday 14 July 2016, 7:07am

Tasmanian apprentice Kyle Maskiell has been suspended for eight meetings for failing to ride a horse out to the finishing line at Moonee Valley.

Maskiell finished fifth on Luckyi'mbarefoot in the Ranvet Handicap (1600m) on Wednesday, missing fourth place by a head.

Stewards believed had Maskiell not stopped riding three or four strides out from the winning post, he could have finished one place better.

"I believe it's a wake-up call for me," Maskiell said.

He said he was looking to be apprenticed in Victoria and told stewards he felt a fine would be the right penalty.

"I'm not going to get any better sitting on the sidelines," he said.

Chief steward Terry Bailey because Maskiell had been severely reprimanded earlier in the meeting for the same thing when fourth on Dance With Fontein, a suspension was warranted.

Maskiell's suspension will start after he rides at Devonport on Saturday.

Holly McKechnie copped her second suspension in as many days for careless riding aboard Diamond Duke in the same race at Moonee Valley.

She was outed for eight meetings, to be tacked on to the end of an 11-meeting ban from Murtoa on Tuesday.
