First Bloom given chance to blossom in Cup

Thursday 30 June 2016, 2:44pm

As First Bloom's racing career draws to a close, her trainer Greg Bennett will try to enrich her pedigree in a stakes race at Rosehill.

The mare already has a couple of Listed race seconds on her record and Bennett will try to add to those in Saturday's Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill.

Like her stablemate Piamimi who runs in the 1900m-race for fillies and mares at Rosehill, First Bloom will head to the breeding barn in the spring.

"I had First Bloom in the 1900 metre race as well but decided to give her a chance at the 2400," Bennett said.

"Both she and Piamimi are coming to the ends of their careers and it would be nice to get black type.

"When I saw there was a small field for the Winter Cup, I decided to run First Bloom there because she seems to me to be the type who can get the distance and can maybe get into a place.

"Had there been a big field of legitimate strong stayers I would not have run her but we'll stick our toe in the water and have a go.

"It's nearly the end for First Bloom and Piamimi but if they go well we would think about the Grafton Cup in a couple of weeks for both of them."

First Bloom began her career with Darren Weir in Victoria and ran second in two Tasmanian Stakes races as a three-year-old.

She had two starts for premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan late last year before making her way to Bennett at Scone.

"It's taken a while for me to work her out but her runs for me have been pleasing," Bennett said.

"I don't think the trip will be a problem."

At her most recent start over 1800m at Rosehill on June 18, First Bloom finished sixth, just two lengths from the winner Vassal with Piamimi eighth after getting back early.

The Hawkes Racing-trained Tucanchoo is the $2.50 favourite for the Winter Cup as he backs up from his neck second to Index Linked in last Saturday's Tattersall's Cup at Eagle Farm.

Index Linked was also among the Winter Cup entries but will stay in Queensland for Saturday's Caloundra Cup at the Sunshine Coast.
