Jumbo Prince to finally get his trip

Thursday 30 June 2016, 10:55am

Trainer Michael Nolan finally gets a chance to test a theory about Jumbo Prince when the gelding races against class stayers in the Listed Caloundra Cup.

Nolan has always believed Jumbo Prince would be competitive at 2400 metres but has not had a chance to test him until Saturday.

Jumbo Prince finished third in last year's Queensland Derby but the race was run at 2200m because it had been transferred to Doomben.

The closure of Eagle Farm for renovations means there have been very few open company races at 2400m or longer in Queensland.

Jumbo Prince has raced well this winter at shorter distances, dead heating for first in the Listed Members Hcp (1600m) and also being a good second in the Ipswich Cup (2150m) behind Saturday's rival Maurus.

Nolan said he wasn't underestimating Jumbo Prince's difficult task in reversing the places against Maurus who he rated a very good stayer.

"But we have gone down a kilo and Maurus has gone up a kilo. He is a big strong horse who will probably carry 59kgs. But Caloundra is a testing track and Jumbo Prince has raced well there," Nolan said.

"Also my horse handles all types of tracks so if it's wet at least we know he will handle it."

Jumbo Prince has been very consistent during his career winning 10 races and more than $650,000 in prizemoney.

"He has given us a lot of fun and he deserves to get another go at top class horses this winter," Nolan said.

Jumbo Prince could press on to the Grafton Cup on July 14 if he races well on Saturday.

"There isn't much else around for him but it could be an option," Nolan said.
