Jenny Duggan wins apprentices race

Wednesday 13 February 2013, 4:50pm

Two states, two horses and two wins. All in all it was a satisfying 20 minutes for Warwick Farm trainer Bjorn Baker on Wednesday.

His two-year-old filly Twilight Royale romped home in the Inglis Premier (1200m) at Mornington in Victoria while Burbero just managed to hold on to win the Greg Carmody Handicap (1550m) at Canterbury, a race which also doubled as a heat of the apprentices' Rising Star series.

Baker's stable representative Jason Patrick said it was a tough race for Burbero who has come to the end of his preparation and will now be spelled.

"He toughed it out just through ability," Patrick said.

Winning apprentice Jenny Duggan said she went from being confident of victory to wondering whether Burbero would hang on.

"He died on his run. I thought he was going to bolt in but 50 (metres) out I wasn't so confident," Duggan said.

The victory takes Duggan to 10 points in the 2012/13 Rising Star series for apprentice riders.

The series is led by Lester Grace on 16 points with Sam Clipperton's second on So Symbolic in Wednesday's race has lifted him into clear second spot on 14.

Duggan, who is leading the Sydney apprentices' premiership, was delighted to take victory in a race against her fellow junior riders.

"It's always good winning," she said.

"I got Bjorn a (two) state double so happy days."
