Blueberry Hill earns G1 Tatts Tiara tilt

Saturday 18 June 2016, 4:58pm

Classy filly Blueberry Hill could have earned a start in next Saturday's Group One Tatts Tiara with her win at Ipswich.

Blueberry Hill ($13) continued the trend on Saturday of horses winning after long breaks between victories when she won the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m).

The filly hadn't won since the Group Two Champange Stakes at Doomben in May last year when she was a two-year-old.

Trainer Liam Birchley has always had a high opinion of Blueberry Hill, which has been a work in progress for him.

"I took her along slowly this time but a few things went wrong. I put blinkers on her and she bolted in her race, so they came off today and that worked," Birchley said.

"I was a lot more confident when they downgraded the track to soft. I will probably enter her for the Tatts Tiara at Eagle Farm but who knows if she will handle it.

"One thing I have always thought she was a class horse and it is the last Group One of the season."

Birchley also had the runner up Elusive Catch ($10) which was a long neck from Blueberry Hill.

Elusive Catch is owned by All Blacks coach Steve Hanson who is a long-term friend of Birchley's.

"I am not sure where we will go with her as she might need something a bit easier than the Tiara," he added.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Echo Galo ($5.50) was 1 3/4 lengths back in third place after hitting the lead at the 300m.
