Rory Hutchings has ridden one winner on his final day as an apprentice to maintain his 14-win lead over Koby Jennings in the race for the junior title.

Hutchings rode the Paul Perry-trained Mad About You to win at Canterbury on Wednesday after Jennings had clawed one back on Neretva for trainer Grant Allard.

Jennings has until July 31 to whittle away at the 33-19 margin after riding six winners at the past two Saturday meetings in Sydney.

"My confidence has got a lot better over the last couple of weeks," Jennings said.

Up-and-coming apprentice, Andrew Adkins, kept himself in the race for second with a win on Godolphin's Duca Valentinois in a 1550m-benchmark race.

Adkins' three-kilogram claimed reduced Duca Valentinois' weight to 58kg and the imported gelding went on to beat Darci's Affair by 1-1/2 lengths.

John O'Shea's assistant Darren Beadman said the trainer had found the key to the four-year-old.

"John thinks he is better kept fresh and to a mile (1600m)," Beadman said.

"Because he won a couple of races over a mile-and-a-quarter at The Curragh there was a thought that he would run a distance.

"But John has worked him out and put some speed in his legs.

"He is probably the lowest-rated horse Godolphin has sent over here. He is a gelding so he could race on for a good couple of seasons and he will go up through the grades and see where he gets to."

Premier trainer Chris Waller hit the 150 mark for the season when My Giuliano won.

Waller has 14 meetings left to reach his record tally of 167-1/2 winners set in 2012/13.

O'Shea is his nearest rival on 69-1/2 with two-year-old Kent giving him a double at Canterbury with his win over 1550m at his third start.

Unusually for Godolphin, Kent is also a gelding.

"The penny is dropping now and hopefully he can go on with it," Beadman said.
