Lankan Rupee relation scores at Sandown

Saturday 4 June 2016, 12:56pm

The half-sister to former Australian Horse of the Year Lankan Rupee has broken through for her maiden win with an easy victory at Sandown.

Inspired Estrelle took out the Ladbrokes.Com.Au Handicap on Saturday, extending the lead of Dwayne Dunn in the Melbourne jockeys' premiership.

Trained by Mick Price, who to date has prepared Lankan Rupee for five Group One victories, Inspired Estrelle ($7) scored by 2-3/4 lengths from Montoya's Secret ($5) with the $4 favourite Kenedna a half-neck away third.

With Price holidaying in England, stable representative Mick Nolen said Inspired Estrelle had been a work in progress, similar to a younger Lankan Rupee, before the high class sprinter underwent a gelding operation.

"She can be a little temperamental, like her brother was when he was younger but the penny is starting to drop and there should be a nice future for her," Nolen said of Inspired Estrelle.

"The boys at home have done a good job, especially Nathan Dunn, and they have settled her down.

"She's a lot kinder in her work now and doesn't want to rush as much."

Nolen expected the soft track conditions to suit Inspired Estrelle after Lankan Rupee had scored one of his best wins on wet ground in the TJ Smith Stakes in Sydney.

Dunn, sporting a swollen face courtesy of a bee sting on the way to the barriers for a race at Bendigo on Thursday, expects bigger things to come from Inspired Estrelle.

"She's a nice horse," Dunn said.

"She's got a nice turn of foot and has some big boots to fill but I think she can climb a pretty good mountain."

Dunn was under strict instructions to ride in Melbourne on Saturday and bypass the abandoned Queensland Oaks meeting at Eagle Farm.

His daughter Jessica turned 18 during the week and he was told he could not miss the party as he did for his apprentice son Dylan's a couple of years ago.
