Michelle Payne in fall at Mildura

Monday 23 May 2016, 6:07pm

Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne is one of five jockeys hospitalised after race falls in two states.

Four apprentice jockeys were taken to hospital after a multiple-horse fall at Taree on Monday while Payne came to grief at Mildura.

Payne created history when she became the first woman to win the Cup last November aboard Prince Of Penzance.

She was taken to Mildura Hospital complaining of abdominal pain after coming off Dutch Courage but was conscious and moving her arms and legs.

Earlier in the day she had ridden a double on Chamois Road and Matamanoa for her trainer-brother Patrick who also prepares Dutch Courage.

"Michelle Payne to go to hospital for observation, fully conscious and has movement of arms and legs, complaining of abdominal pain," race day stewards said.

At Taree, Samantha Clenton's mount Bazza's Boy came down at the home turn of Monday's first race with his rider suffering suspected fractures to her left leg and collarbone and pain in a hip.

Blinkin Rules ridden by Jackson Murphy and Casino Bride ridden by Nyssa Burrells both fell over the top of the stricken horse while another two horses, Lady Lobban (Kaylee Kirkwood) and Nonino (Taylor Marshall) lost their riders as they tried to avoid the accident.

Clenton was taken to Port Macquarie Hospital along with Kirkwood who had an injury to her right leg and concussion.

Murphy and Burrells were transported to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle with rib injuries.

Marshall was cleared of any serious problem but was stood down from his remaining rides while Travis Wolfgram sustained a minor injury when he was struck in the face by his mount while he was trying to avoid the fallen horses.

Bazza's Boy fractured a leg in the fall and was euthanised while all the other horses involved escaped injury.
