Kebede outstays rivals in Gr 2 The Roses

Saturday 21 May 2016, 4:04pm

Kebede is poised to be trainer Matthew Dunn's first Queensland Oaks runner after her win in The Roses at Doomben.

Dunn's long-term plan to target the Oaks with Kebede is nearly complete after the filly scored by a half neck from the $101 rank outsider Sebring Sally on Saturday.

"She's done an amazing job and we've earmarked this race and the Oaks from the time we bought her," Dunn said.

"We've been trying to hold her together and keep the spring in her step.

"I thought any races she won on the way through to the Oaks would be a bonus."

Jockey Jim Byrne had Kebede ($19) travelling comfortably in fourth place before angling the filly into the clear soon after entering the home straight.

"She switches off so well in her races and Matt's done a great job and I'm sure she's going to be even better suited across the road at Eagle Farm," Byrne said.

Dunn believes the spacious Eagle Farm track and extra 400m in the Group One Queensland Oaks on June 4 will be perfect for Kebede.

"She takes such a long stride she's got Eagle Farm written all over her," he said.

Glen Colless was full of praise for the effort of Sebring Sally who travelled three-wide without cover before challenging for the lead on the home turn.

"She would've won had she been able to have a rest at some stage during the race," Colless said.

"She won't have any trouble running 2400 metres. She ran it today."

Jason Collett said Imposing Lass was brave in defeat from her wide barrier.

"She'll definitely stay the 2400 metres without a worry in the world and I can hardly wait for the Oaks," he said.
