Weir takes cautious route with Raw Impulse

Darren Weir is doing his best to keep a lid on emerging talent Raw Impulse.

The exciting import lines up in the Racing Photos Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday and is the $1.40 favourite to keep his Australian winning run intact.

Raw Talent scored at his Australian debut at Moonee Valley in March before backing up with a strong victory over 1800m at Caulfield on April 23.

Hugh Bowman rode the Australian Bloodstock-owned galloper to his Moonee Valley victory and predicted a bright future for the four-year-old while Brad Rawiller echoed those sentiments after his last-start win.

With Bowman riding in Japan and Rawiller on the Weir-trained Stratum Star in the Group One BTC Cup at Doomben on Saturday, Dean Yendall has landed the mount on Raw Impulse.

Weir said no firm plans were in place for Raw Impulse after Saturday's run.

"There was talk about him going to Brisbane (for the Doomben Cup) but we'll get through Saturday first," Weir said.

"We all had a talk after his last win and we came up with the common-sense route so we'll just put him through his classes at this stage.

"It's more about looking towards the spring with him, if he's good enough."

Raw Impulse is trained at Warrnambool where he can work on the beach dunes, wade in the salt water and have an occasional track gallop.

Weir will also be represented by last-start Caulfield winner Doctor Care and Warrnambool's Galleywood Hurdle winner Gingerboy in Saturday's race.
