Stats favour big names in Flight Stakes

Friday 5 October 2012, 5:49pm

Recent Flight Stakes history is on Gai Waterhouse's side but rival trainers Bart Cummings and Clarry Conners are also no strangers to success in the Group One fillies feature.

Between the three of them they have won 14 Flight Stakes with Waterhouse claiming seven of the past 15 runnings.

Waterhouse has emerging filly Urban Groove who is second favourite in betting behind the Conners-trained Dear Demi, who'll be chasing the Warwick Farm trainer's fourth win in the event but first since 1997.

Third favourite Norzita, who lost the Tea Rose Stakes on protest last start, is one of two Cummings-trained runners and can make it a fifth win for the famous trainer, and first since 1994, if successful.

James Cummings, stable forman for his grandfather, says a "supremely fit" Norzita will step out at Randwick for her spring grand final.

"The challenge for her is that this will be her sixth run this preparation so she'll need to be pretty tough, but we think she's a pretty tough filly," Cummings said.

"She should be running pretty well on Saturday.

"She's supremely fit now and she should really enjoy the tiny step forward to the 1600 metres.

"She's against a similar field to last start although Urban Groove adds a mix of form."

Cummings also has last-start Kembla Grange maiden winner Duet who steps up from 1300m and is a filly Cummings said was progressive with a bit of quality.

"The way she's going she'll even be that bit better in Melbourne," Cummings said.

Hugh Bowman, winner of three of the past five Flight Stakes, rides Norzita.
