Flying Jess winning the Group 3 SAJC Sire’s Produce Stakes! Trainer John Moloney - Rider Jordan Childs

I was thrilled with the win by Flying Jess at Morphettville on Saturday.  The filly was presented as well as any horse at the meeting by John Moloney.  This was our first Stakes win with John and he has done a sterling job not only with this filly but also with Maldicion who heads back into training today.  It wasn’t hard to see the elation on John’s face on Saturday and the pride he had in Flying Jess’s effort to fend off a serious challenge in the straight.  She was very brave in the final 100 metres.

John is the latest trainer to be put on the Prime Thoroughbreds roster and he has just the two horses for us.  I am syndicating a Sebring filly with John and I look forward to her racing career and given the excellent results John and his team have achieved for us I certain more will come in time.

Jordan Childs has been a great success for Prime Thoroughbreds and again gave us a gem of a ride. He is a terrific young man and his infectious laugh and enthusiasm rubs off on our clients.

Flying Jess will now join Husson Eagle and Invincible Al at Yarraman Park for a well earned spell before being prepared for a crack at the Melbourne Spring Carnival and perhaps the $2 million Magic Millions Three Years Old Classic in January.

I purchased Flying Jess for $60,000 at the 2015 January Magic Millions Sale and the win on Saturday took her earnings to $82,830 from just 5 starts but more importantly her value as a breeding proposition when she completes her racing career increased with her worth as a Group 3 winning two year old filly being approximately $300,000.

THE END OF AN ERA

On Friday at the Inglis Sales Complex in Sydney will see the end of an era at Prime Thoroughbreds when Hazy Blur goes through the sales ring.

I purchased her dam Red Centre 13 years ago at the Inglis Premier Sale.  She was a beautiful yearling by Rubiton and our first ever client Con Retsas purchased her outright to race with a view to breeding from her at the end of her racing career.  Unfortunately she had to be retired after just two races with her being placed 2nd in the VRC SuperVOBIS Wyndam Vale Handicap on debut.  She suffered a career ending injury at her second start when a short priced favourite at Moonee Valley.

Con decided to continue with his plan to breed from the mare and I was lucky enough to purchase the first foal out of her by Magic Albert.  He went on to race as Too Many Reds winning 10 races and $298,655 in stakes money.  He didn’t win a stakes race but was stakes placed on four occasions with his best run being a nose 2nd in the Listed Lightning Stakes at Randwick in course record time.  This record still stands today.

In all I syndicated five of Red Centre’s progeny with all being winners.  She has now had six to race for six winners.  The foals after Too Many Reds were Faith’n’Courage, Not Another Red, One More Red and Hazy Blur.

After Hazy Blur is sold on Friday it will be the first time since 2003 that I haven’t been looking after Red Centre or one of her foals which in a way is a bit sad.  Red Centre was a terrific little mare.

I must say I take a lot of interest in the foals out of the mare’s we raced because I know they were well looked after and while I wouldn’t buy a yearling out of all of them I certainly would be happy to support them at a reasonable price if I found the right one.

Some of our other mares with good class progeny running are Unabated, Miss Polanas, Zelady, Graphite Lass, Shine On Anna, Believe’n’Achieve, Maha Chakri and Calming.

STATISTICS – BLOODSTOCK.COM.AU

I have mentioned before the great job the bloodstock.com.au site does for our industry not only selling horses but also offering transparency to the syndication sector.  This is very important.

Prime Thoroughbreds results are there for all to view on bloodstock.com.au and while at times we have had a quiet period overall our results have been amongst the leaders in our industry and very consistent since we start having our results published.

I can’t understand why a syndicator wouldn’t want their results posted on the site and if your syndicator doesn’t have their winners, placed horses and stakes horses tracked you should ask ‘why’?

It should give the market a guide to how well or I suppose poorly a particular syndicator’s horses perform.  I see it as a powerful marketing tool.

I want the racing public, in particular those people wanting to get into a horse through a licenced syndicator to be able to view real results and the facility on bloodstock.com.au provides just that.  They need to have confidence that the person they are dealing with is competent in all aspects of the racing industry not just a salesman.

Over the years I have seen far too many people come into our industry as syndicators thinking they were going to make an easy dollar.  Most of these people don’t last long but it is amazing just how much damage they can do in a short period of time with the big loser being our industry with potentially long term owners lost forever.  Many people that come into our industry only get one crack at it and if their experience is a poor one they are gone and you can’t blame them.

I have tallied the results for all the syndicators listed on the bloodstock.com.au site for the first nine months of the 2015/16 Season.  Prime Thoroughbreds is the leading syndicator on the site with 62 posts for the season thus far.  Check the site out, it is very informative.

Syndication companies are very complex and complicated beasts to run with new challenges popping up all the time. There is much more to it than purchasing yearlings and finding owners for them.

I have seen it all in the 19 years I have been running the business and I must say I am still learning and trying to improve our selection processes as well other areas of our business.  I’m very pleased with where we are at present but can’t be complacent.

As at 30 April 2016 the Prime Thoroughbreds current racing team comprises 44 horses of racing

age of which 15 are un-raced.  Of the remaining 29 we see 22 individual winners.  The 15 unraced horses are made up of 2 x three year olds and 13 x 2 year olds.

ON THE TRACK

Go Arriverderci winning her maiden on the 28th April 2016

Apart from Flying Jess’s great win we had a pretty good week with Go Arrivederci breaking her maiden in good style at Wyong, Not Surprising running a nice 2nd in what may finish up being a good form race and Brooklyn Lass running 4th after having no luck in the running.

Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong for Reneged at Doomben.  His run was quite good under the circumstances and he is now being directed towards the Queensland Guineas in mid- June.

Providing the track is not too wet Invincible Me will start at Warrnambool this afternoon.  Hijack Hussy lines up in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes at Morphettville on Saturday with Brad Rawiller booked to ride her and More Than A Rose runs in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet.

PRIME THOROUGHBREDS YEARLING OF THE WEEK

Mossman Colt out of Nephtys 2014

10 shares @ $12,000 each (5% shares available) Kris Lees to train

The colt

Mossman needs little introduction to our owners.  He is a superb sire and once again sits in the top 15 of the Australian Sires Premiership.  This colt oozes quality which is a good sign with the progeny of Mossman.

I was really taken by him when he was paraded at the Inglis Classic Sale and he comes from a very good farm in Torryburn Stud.  The colt is very athletic and I expect he will get up and run as a two year old.

Mossman

Mossman has been a big success since he started his stud career and to date has sired 380 winners with 55 stakes horses to his credit.

His best progeny have been Buffering, Mossfun, Ofcourseican, Neeson, Love Conquers All and the list goes on.  He is particularly potent when crossed with Danehill and his sons and grandsons mares with 16 of his stakes horses being bred on these lines.

I have always been a big fan of Mossman and will continue to support him when the right yearling comes along.

Buffering’s win in the  Group I Al Quoz Sprint (1000m) on the turf at Meydan in Dubai on 26 March was another great advertisement for Mossman and also a terrific boost for the Australian breeding industry.

It isn’t well known that Mossman has far less horses representing him on the track than most of the other sires the top 15 on the Australian General Sires List.  This is due to him serving limited books of mares in recent years.  He has been well managed by Vinery Stud.

Mossman’s son Love Conquers All is currently the leading First Season Sire in Australia which further highlights the achievements of this ‘unsung hero’ of the Australian breeding industry.

Nephtys

Nephtys is by the great broodmare sire Redoute’s Choice.  Redoute’s Choice is the youngest sire of the top 10 on the Broodmare sire’s list in Australia and currently sits in 5th position.

The best progeny out of his daughters include Sacred Falls, Pasadena Girl, Zoustar and Stay With Me.  In all he has 81 stakes performers in his 393 winners which is a great conversion rate.

Redoute’s Choice as a Sire has statistics that are almost without peer in Australia.  He has sired 129 stakes winners, a further 101 stakes placed horses and has proven to be an amazing sire of sires with Not A Single Doubt and Snitzel heading the way for him.

Nephtys comes from a very good female line that includes the Group 1 winner Star Shiraz.  There are a number of good two year old winners in the family which is a good pointer that this colt born on 19 August could well get up and get running early.  He ticks all the boxes and I’m looking forward to his racing career.  He is a terrific athlete.

I have decided to pay him up for the rich Inglis Series of races.
