Trainer disqualified for four months

Thursday 7 February 2013, 5:12pm

Toowoomba trainer Jai Phillips has been disqualified for four months on a charge related to animal welfare.

Phillips pleaded guilty to failing "to provide reasonable care to prevent an act of cruelty, to take steps as necessary to alleviate any pain, and failed to provide for veterinary treatment where such treatment was necessary" in relation to a yearling filly in his care.

He was aware the filly was in poor condition on October 2 last year and she died at the property five days later.

After receiving a complaint regarding the welfare and condition of horses in the care of Phillips, stewards opened an inquiry on December 4.

Phillips appeared before the inquiry at Toowoomba but the hearing was adjourned until Wednesday at Deagon to hear evidence from three witnesses including Dr. Martin Lenz, Racing Queensland's veterinary surgeon.

Dr Lenz gave expert opinion on photographic evidence submitted relating specifically to two horses on the property.

In handing down the penalty, stewards took into account the chain of events leading up to the filly's death, the guilty plea by Phillips, his co-operation and the remorse he showed throughout the inquiry.

Phillips has until midnight next Wednesday to arrange for any horses under his care to be removed.
