Munce secures Jay Ford for Nicconi Leggera

Thursday 28 April 2016, 11:29am

Jay Ford has picked up a second key ride at Doomben at the expense of suspended jockey Damien Oliver.

Ford replaces Oliver on the favourite Fell Swoop in the Group Two Victory Stakes and he will also ride the Chris Munce-trained Nicconi Leggera, one of the favourites in the two-year-old race.

"It was a bit of a mix-up all around," Munce said.

"Jim Byrne has ridden Nicconi Leggera at her two starts but he got off to ride All Pluck for Tony Gollan.

"I then booked Damien Oliver but he was suspended and I was lucky enough to get Jay. My filly is pretty straightforward and I have taken the blinkers off her for Saturday."

Ford has had plenty of success at Doomben, mainly aboard the champion sprinter Takeover Target with the pair winning the 2007 Doomben 10,000.

Nicconi Leggera is one of several very promising youngsters in the race.

All Pluck is a son of former top American juvenile Pluck and impressed in a recent jump-out.

Gollan also has Tiyatrolani, a 7-1/2 length winner at Ipswich on debut.

"This is a big step up for her but I would expect her to race well," Gollan said.

"I was going to wait a week and go to the Ken Russell at the Gold Coast but this suited better."

Trainer Steve O'Dea is happy with the progress of Magic Millions Classic placegetter Candika in her lead up to the race.
