Zedlion backs up to win on wet track

Saturday 2 February 2013, 4:02pm

A wet track and a seven-day back-up were no hurdles for Zedlion at Rosehill on Saturday, although trainer Jason Coyle admitted he went to the races unsure what to expect.

The five-year-old went into the Norm Snowden Handicap (1500m) off a second to War Charm at Warwick Farm a week earlier and fought off Burbero after being headed inside the final 100 metres to score by a half neck.

Sent out the second elect at $4.80, Zedlion was ridden by apprentice Shaun Guymer and handled the heavy 10 much better than Coyle expected.

"I had no idea how he would handle the ground," Coyle said.

"He has had mixed form on wet tracks before but they have been winter tracks.

"It's a matter of footing.

"Shaun rode him a treat. He is a very good rider and deserves more opportunities."

Coyle said the Listed National Sprint (1400m) at Canberra on the Black Opal support program on March 10 was the race he and his owners were targeting.

"Whether he has another run or not we'll wait and see."

The win was Guymer's first city success since he recently transferred his indentures from Joe Pride at Warwick Farm to Steve Farley at Wyong.

The disappointment of Saturday's race was $4.60 favourite Disciple who weakened to finish last of the nine runners, 14 lengths from the winner.
