Dramatic week ends happily for Dunn

Saturday 2 February 2013, 3:15pm

A drama-charged week ended successfully for trainer Matthew Dunn when Epic Terra won at Doomben on Saturday.

Dunn had to work his team of horses at the Gold Coast on Wednesday because the Murwillumbah track where he is based was under water from a deluge of rain caused by ex-tropical cyclone Oswald.

"It was tough but after a lot of hard work from the guys at home and a devoted committee to get the track to be workable on Thursday helped quite a bit," Dunn said.

"We had the biggest flood in history there with a metre-and-a-half of water over the track but it drains pretty quickly."

While Dunn concedes Epic Terra isn't the most talented horse in his stable, he makes no secret of his admiration for the gelding.

"He was gone at the furlong but he just kept fighting and tries his little heart out," Dunn said.

"It's a pity he hasn't got the ability of some of the better ones I've got."

Dunn plans to keep targeting restricted class races with Epic Terra following his win in Saturday's Timeform Handicap (1600m).

"We'll just keep chugging along with him in Class Six and these sorts of races until he runs out of them and then we'll see where we end up," he said.

Epic Terra was successful at his first attempt at 1600m at Doomben and Dunn is in no rush to step him up in journey.

"He probably doesn't need to go any further than a mile just now and I might talk to the stewards about taking the blinkers off to see if he can settle a bit better," he said.

"If he settles he'll probably get a bit further but when other horses come up outside him he can hear them and wants to get going."
