Queensland stewards uphold whip protest

Sunday 13 March 2016, 10:19am

Sunshine Coast stewards have created a first by upholding a protest for a jockey breaching whip rules.

At the other end of the tourist coastal strip on Saturday, stewards at the Gold Coast were busy suspending three jockeys for interference and fining another four for whip rule breaches.

At the Sunshine Coast, stewards upheld a protest by Sarah Eilbeck on Stonecast who had originally dead-heated with Rosella, ridden by Taylor Williams.

Eilbeck protested on the grounds Williams had hit her mount eight times before the 100m mark, three more than allowed.

Stewards agreed and said as Eilbeck had ridden within the rules the protest should be upheld.

Williams was fined $400.

Racing Queensland's chief steward Allan Reardon, who was working on the Gold Coast panel, said he wasn't surprised by the Sunshine Coast verdict.

"I haven't seen the race video but we have had a few of these protests and they were dismissed," Reardon said.

"But this one was a dead-heat and the stewards have obviously ruled the breach of the rules changed the result of the race."

Reardon and the Gold Coast stewards had a long day after a rough-house last race.

Jeff Lloyd who rode Wild `N' Famous was outed for 11 days and Michael Cahill, on Desert General, was suspended for eight days.

Earlier Paul Hammersley was suspended for nine days for causing interference in the straight on runner-up Sir Moments in the Gold Coast Stakes.

Stewards also imposed whip breach fines on Beau Appo ($300), Ryan Wiggins (twice, $300 and $500), Kasie Stanley ($300) and Brad Pengelly ($200).
