Trainer Bryan Guy is taking a different approach with Platinum State, electing to run him over 1350 metres for his first-up assignment at Doomben.

The trainer has usually sent him out to begin his campaigns over 1000 or 1200 metres but has given him an extra barrier trial to ensure he is ready for Saturday's Hotel LA Open Handicap.

Platinum State, who hasn't raced since July, can give Guy his first city winner since he returned to his former Gold Coast base after a short stint training at Aquis Farm in the Gold Coast hinterland.

"I have been at the Gold Coast a long time so it didn't take long to settle back in," Guy said.

"The owners of Aquis Farm where I was training at Canungra wanted to take a different direction with it from a training complex."

Guy said he was pleased with Platinum State's trials going into Saturday.

"Platinum State went OK in the trials and his best form is in the 1300 to 1400 metre range where he has won seven races," Guy said.

"He has run about 1.18.5 for the 1350 at Doomben and while he will obviously improve for Saturday's run he should competitive."

One thing the trainer doesn't want for Platinum State is a wet track.

"Statistics tell the tale with him.," he said.

"He has had 27 starts on dry tracks for nine wins and a 33 per cent win strike rate. On wet tracks he has had 12 starts for two minor placings."

"If the track is wet we would have to wait for another day."

In-form jockey Paul Hammersley will be having his first race ride on Platinum State but partnered the gelding in both his recent trials.

Hammersley has firmly re-established himself in Queensland since returning from a stint in NSW last year.
