Price with top trio for third Aust Guineas

Tuesday 1 March 2016, 5:04pm

Fresh from their Blue Diamond success with Extreme Choice, trainer Mick Price and jockey Craig Newitt will now combine in pursuit of another Australian Guineas.

Price has three chances in Saturday's $750,000 Australian Guineas at Flemington with Newitt to continue his association with Tarzino.

Price and Newitt have won the Guineas twice with Light Fantastic (2008) and Heart Of Dreams (2009).

But the astute trainer is measured in his assessment of Tarzino's chances of winning a second Flemington Group One, insisting the pressure of the race will determine the Victoria Derby winner's hopes of chasing down his rivals over 1600m.

"He's going to need the speed on over a mile," Price said.

"He needs to draw middle to outside, get out the back a little bit and he'll be really finishing, there's no doubt. But he just needs the race run the right way.

"If there was one leader that had a soft lead, it's probably going to win. But if there's pace on you'll get the closers and that's what we're hoping for."

After the Guineas Tarzino will head to the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and ATC Australian Derby (2400m).

Ready For Victory was third in Press Statement's Caulfield Guineas in the spring and will get another shot at a Guineas.

He was paired with Tarzino in trackwork on Tuesday and both pleased Price how they went to the line.

Price said Tarzino sat off his stablemate in the 1200m work-out with Tarzino finishing slightly in front.

"He needs a trouble-free run," Price said of Ready For Victory.

"If he gets a nice run in the race he'll give plenty of cheek."

Sailing By finished strongly first-up to just miss beating Guineas-bound Mahuta in the Autumn Stakes (1400m) in which Tarzino ran on for fourth.

Sailing By will be trying to join Triscay, Miss Finland, Shamrocker and Mosheen as fillies to win the Australian Guineas.

"She's really well in herself and the Mahutu form is good," Price said.

"It's a Group One on a big track. She should run a good race."

New Zealand colt Xtravagant is the $3.80 favourite with Palentino at $4.80 and Tarzino at $6.50 ahead of acceptances on Wednesday.
