Williams follows Weatherly to Randwick

Sunday 28 February 2016, 5:34pm

MELBOURNE - Craig Williams will bypass the Australian Guineas meeting at Flemington to ride exciting colt Weatherly in Sydney.

Williams steered Weatherly to victory in the Talindert Stakes at Flemington on February 20, the colt's first step to the Golden Slipper.

Trainer Paul Messara wants to add to his prize money to ensure he makes the field and Weatherly will run in the Todman Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

Weatherly has spent the majority of his preparation at the Pinecliff stables of owner Jonathan Munz on the Mornington Peninsular while Messara's Scone set-up undergoes renovations.

The Todman Stakes will feature a number of highly fancied candidates for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper on March 19 with Weatherly's opponents expected to include Astern and the unbeaten Capitalist.

"Wherever he goes at this stage I'll follow him," Williams said.

"The Todman's going to be a cracking race and it looks like it will be the Golden Slipper preview.

"We'll find out where they all sit after that."

Williams first teamed up with Weatherly in a jump-out at Balnarring last month and rode the Beneteau colt to his debut sixth in the Blue Diamond Preview on January 26 when he missed the start.

He was again slow into stride in the Talindert but quickly recovered to score an impressive win.

Weatherly is currently a $15 chance in Golden Slipper betting with Extreme Choice displacing Capitalist as favourite with his win in Saturday's Blue Diamond Stakes.

Extreme Choice has firmed from $8 to $3.60 with Capitalist now at $4.60 from $3.50.

Williams also has bookings for King's Troop in the Fireball, Monogram in the Aspiration Quality and Lucky Can Be in the Wenona Girl Handicap.
