Ghisoni in line for Coolmore Classic start

Saturday 27 February 2016, 3:51pm

James McDonald has described Ghisoni as a filly of rare quality after an effortless Surround Stakes win in record time.

Ghisoni covered the 1400m in 1:21.35, eclipsing the previous best time for the race set by her dam Portillo in 2009.

"I've never sat on a filly that's got gears like her," McDonald said.

"I've sat on a nice Oaks filly, a Guineas winner, but she's good.

"She's a horse that does everything so easy."

Such is the stable's opinion of Ghisoni, who remains undefeated in three starts, trainer John O'Shea is flirting with the thought of pitting her against mares in the Coolmore Classic.

A final decision on a start has yet to be made but O'Shea confirmed lightweight jockey Chad Schofield was on standby to ride Ghisoni at 50kg in the Coolmore.

Brenton Avdulla is also in the mix but cannot ride below 52kg.

"(It's) whether we want to run a horse fourth start of her career in a Coolmore, but it might be the only time she carries 50 kilos," O'Shea said.

"We will have a think about it as a team and see what we come up with.

"This is a special filly.

McDonald dictated from the front aboard the $2.25 favourite and despite the effort of runner-up Single Gaze ($19) to mount a challenge, Ghisoni was in a class of her own posting a 1-1/4 length win.

Kathy O'Hara said Single Gaze tried hard.

"It was a top run but the winner is very special," O'Hara said.

Stay With Me was no match for the winner in finishing third while VRC Oaks runner-up Honesta made a solid return, finishing sixth.

Ghisoni gave Godolphin the middle leg of an interstate stakes-race treble with Tally and Bow Creek claiming Group Two wins in Melbourne.
