Slipper test for Godolphin colts at Rwick

Thursday 25 February 2016, 4:45pm

Godolphin is poised to increase its Golden Slipper arsenal when Telperion and Souchez line up in the Skyline Stakes at Randwick.

The pair sit atop early markets for Saturday's Group Two Slipper lead-up with Telperion a slight favourite over his stablemate.

Telperion atoned for a debut defeat in October to score a strong Listed race win earlier this month when he came from last in a small field to overwhelm his rivals.

"Telperion was very impressive and he showed us that he is a lot better when he's allowed to settle and then run on," trainer John O'Shea said.

"He's a lovely big, strong colt who will appreciate the 1200 metres here.

"He looks a Slipper type and at this stage we're looking at running him."

With James McDonald opting to stick with Telperion, English jockey William Buick takes the mount on Souchez who posted a Rosehill victory at his only start in December.

O'Shea said the colt's performance in the Skyline would determine Souchez's autumn goals.

"Souchez is a very professional type whose work this week has been very sharp," he said.

"He'll benefit from the run and we'll decide after Saturday where he goes next."

A field of eight will line up in the Skyline while the Sweet Embrace Stakes for the fillies has been reduced to 12 after the scratching of the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Quick Feet.

The unbeaten Gai Waterhouse-trained Scarlet Rain holds sway in Sweet Embrace markets ahead of last-start winners Twist Tops for Kris Lees and In The Vanguard from the John Sargent yard.
