Godbolt keen on city challenge for filly

Thursday 31 January 2013, 11:30am

The recent wet weather has played havoc with race meetings around the state but it hasn't dampened trainer Neil Godbolt's enthusiasm.

Based at Port Macquarie on the NSW mid north coast, the trainer will head to Rosehill on Saturday where Al Nova will line up in the TAB.com.au Handicap (1400m).

It will be Al Nova's first attempt at Saturday city grade and Godbolt is looking forward to seeing how the filly handles the challenge.

"It's a good chance to see how she goes...she's been competitive in midweek provincial races and you never know how it's going to go," Godbolt told AAP.

The forecast for more showers over the next few days means conditions at Rosehill are likely to be rain-affected, although Godbolt is confident in Al Nova's ability to handle a wet track.

"She handles it okay and has placed before in those conditions," he said.

Since Sunday several race meetings and barrier trials across the state have had to be postponed or abandoned due to the torrential rain.

One of those was Tuesday's Port Macquarie program while all track work sessions at the track were also cancelled.

"The track was very wet. They really could have called it off on Sunday," Godbolt said.

Godbolt added that the sandy surface appeared to have held up well under the pressure and was reopened for trackwork on Wednesday.

AL Nova was a $26 chance for Saturday's race with TAB fixed odds on Thursday with undefeated Chris Waller-trained filly Royal Descent a clear cut $1.75 favourite.
