Big Money (Choisir) winning the Southern Cross Stakes (Gr.3) at Randwick

Talented sprinter Big Money (6g Choisir  x Lyn’s Money, by Humam) was rock hard fit at this third run back from a spell and did best in a thrilling finish to win the Group III ATC Southern Cross Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

Trained at Scone by Rod Northam, Big Money came with a well-timed run for Robert Thompson to snatch a last stride half head win in the 1200 metre sprint.

“I thought he’d take a couple of runs,” Northam said.

“He’d had a long spell and this race looked perfect for him today.

“We got a good track which he really appreciates so it’s good to get him back into the winner’s circle.”

A $75,000 Inglis Scone Yearling Sale purchase from the Middlebrook Valley Lodge draft, Big Money has won 10 races including three previous stakes races and placed six times from 22 starts earning $712,510 in prizemoney.

Northam is looking at the Group III ATC Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Randwick in a fortnight while heading towards The Championships he has a few options.

“He’s nominated for the T.J. Smith and the Doncaster,” Northam said.

“Whether he runs a mile I’m not sure. I thought he might at the end of last prep and he’d probably get into a Doncaster with a light weight.

“So we’ll just wait and see.”

Big Money was bred by Phil Gunter, who shares in his ownership, and is the third and final foal of Lyn’s Money, who died in 2009.

A good metropolitan winner of eight races and over $160,000 in prizemoney, Lyn’s Money came from the family of Perth stakes-winner Lynsted Lad.

A perennial favourite on the Coolmore roster, Choisir covered 134 mares in Australia last year at a fee of $29,700.

Choisir has a dozen entries for the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.
