Midweek treble for leading jockey McDonald

Wednesday 17 February 2016, 5:46pm

James McDonald has dominated Sydney's midweek meeting at Canterbury with three winners from five rides.

Godolphin's No. 1 jockey opened his account for his boss Sheikh Mohammed with a victory on impressive first starter Chetwood in the Ranvet Handicap.

The three-year-old shaved more than two seconds off the 1200m class record, beating his rivals by almost four lengths.

Trainer John O'Shea said Chetwood, a son of Exceed And Excel, reminded him of stablemate and dual Group winner Vashka.

"James rode him beautifully, he let him have a nice day out and extended up the straight," O'Shea said.

"He reminds us all of a horse we have called Vashka. He's got a similar sort of demeanour and is by the same stallion so if he ends up as good as Vashka we'll be very happy."

McDonald brought up a double on Miss Denni in the Pro-Ride Handicap to deliver Chris Waller his 100th metropolitan win of the season and a race later linked with Anthony Cummings to score aboard Prime Target.

The star rider will be hoping to continue his momentum at Flemington on Saturday when he rides Exosphere in the Group One Black Caviar Lightning.
