Aussie caller shortlisted for plum US job

Friday 12 February 2016, 7:13am

Australian caller Craig Evans has been shortlisted to become the permanent track announcer at the prestigious Santa Anita course in California.

The West Australian is currently the senior race broadcaster for the Singapore Turf Club, a position he's held since 2010.

Santa Anita will host this year's Breeders' Cup in November and Evans is one of four callers to have been whittled down from the three dozen track officials say applied for the job from around the world.

Evans will audition at a nine-race meeting on February 20 and be formally interviewed the next day.

He faces opposition from Britain's David Fitzgerald who works for Racing UK and is the main caller at Royal Ascot.

Other finalists are local callers Frank Mirahmadi and Michael Wrona.

South African Trevor Denman, who had called races at Santa Anita since 1983, retired in December.
