Ranked win the perfect gift for Wallace

Thursday 11 February 2016, 11:37am

A new-look John Wallace is hoping to celebrate his birthday with a Doomben win.

Wallace, who turned 70 on Thursday, will start much-travelled stayer Ranked in the Secutor Securities Handicap on Saturday.

He has scaled back his team of horses but has high hopes for Ranked and a renewed outlook on life after knee surgery.

"I have lost 25 kilos and had both my knees have been repaired," he said.

"I feel a whole lot better. I have one tip for you - if you need your knees repaired get them done, even if it does hurt."

Ranked originally raced in England.

By noted sire of stayers Montjeu, Ranked was raced as Rougemont in England and was trained by Richard Hannon.

His best win was the Tattersalls Millions 3YO at Newmarket before a sale to leading Australian owner Lloyd Williams.

After four starts for Williams, the gelding was sold to Wallace stable client last year and has gradually turned his form around.

"A few things didn't go right for him in Melbourne and he is finally settling in to the Australian way of life," Wallace said.

"He won well at the Gold Coast last start over 1800 metres and he will be suited by the extra distance on Saturday."
