Tumbler a winner on overdue debut

Wednesday 10 February 2016, 5:35pm

The long wait for four year old mare Tumbler to make her debut proved worthwhile when she scored an impressive win at Ipswich.

Tumbler ($4.40), the older half sister of smart three-year-old Nieta, came from second last in the middle stages to win Wednesday's Farewell Stan Patch Plate (1200m).

Trainer Barry Lockwood bought Tumbler as a yearling and thought he would be a top class two-year-old but she missed two season with a series of injuries.

Stable representative Karen Lockwood said Tumbler had always shown a heap of ability but getting her to races had been a stop-start affair.

"She has been plagued with bad luck," Lockwood said.

"There is one word to describe Tumbler's win, relief."

Winning jockey Bridget Grylls said Tumbler had a few quirks but also had plenty of ability.

Tumbler's win was one of four maiden plate races run over 1200m at Ipswich and they also produced another impressive winner in Giuliani ($2.50).

Trainer Tony Gollan said he had made a mistake with Giuliani at his previous start.

"Giuliani was beaten here last time but I admit it was trainer error," Gollan said.

"I shouldn't have brought him back from 1200 to 1000 metres and the 1200 today suited him much better.

"He surprised me a bit when he ran fourth in the Magic Millions Maiden three runs back. He is a horse which seems to do better in races than at track work," Gollan said.
