Pires rides Up Cups to Hobart Cup victory

Monday 8 February 2016, 5:36pm

Up Cups has given jockey David Pires his biggest career win taking out the Hobart Cup.

After 14 seasons riding in Tasmania, Pires landed his first jockeys' premiership last season.

"All the local jockeys want to win either a Hobart or a Launceston Cup," Pires told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

"I've been here for 14 years now and I'm just over the moon.

"I came over here as an apprentice and just love the place."

Given a good ride by Pires, Up Cups completed a winning hat-trick in scoring a half-length win from Geegees Goldengirl with Victorian visitor Beliveau three-quarters-of-a-length back in third place.

Up Cups win was his third cup success in his last three starts after winning the Brighton Cup and Summer Cup at Hobart at his previous two starts.

He will chase another cup, the Launceston Cup over 2400m on February 24 at his next start.

"He's just a brilliant horse and hopefully now he can win the Launceston Cup too," Pires said.

The favourite Quick Strike, ridden by Damien Oliver, went amiss at the 900m mark and was pulled out of the race.

High class four-year-old Admiral recorded his 13th win from 18 starts when he won the weight-for-age Thomas Lyons Stakes over 1400m.
