Solicit to run against Winx in Apollo

Monday 8 February 2016, 3:58pm

Solicit will take on Cox Plate winner Winx in the Apollo Stakes in Sydney rather than travel to Melbourne for the Group One C F Orr Stakes.

Trainer Gerald Ryan entered her in both races on Saturday mindful of her poor record at Randwick but will take the chance.

There are 15 Group One winners among the 22 nominations for the Orr which is the first Group One race of the year while The Group Two Apollo Stakes has attracted 16 entries.

"Her two runs at Randwick have been awful," Ryan said.

"But I think she had excuses. She over-raced in one and in the other she was coming to the end of her preparation.

"Her aim is the Coolmore Classic so I'm not sure if we want to be going back and forth to Melbourne."

Solicit finished last in the 2014 Queen Of The Turf at Randwick after her second in the Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill when she was trained in Melbourne by Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra.

After being transferred to Ryan in Sydney to give her a change of scenery, the mare led before weakening to finish a long last in a Group Three race at Randwick and again showed a poor post race recovery.

Her younger stablemate Perignon has had a much better time at Randwick with her minor place in the Group One Flight Stakes a highlight.

She lines up in Saturday's Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) for her first start since the spring.

As a two-year-old Perignon was a close second to Speak Fondly in a Group Two race and finished third behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained filly in the Group One Flight.

"Speak Fondly might not be in the Light Fingers but it still looks like being a very strong race," Ryan said.

"The Snowdens filly Kangarilla Joy is very good and (Thousand Guineas winner) Stay With Me is flying.

"But Perignon has come back much stronger and I'm really happy with her so I'll weigh things up.

Tim Clark, who won Saturday's Eskimo Stakes on the Ryan-trained Spill The Beans, takes the ride on Perignon while Kerrin McEvoy rides Solicit.
