Cox Plate winner Winx in Randwick day out

Saturday 6 February 2016, 2:11pm

Cox Plate winner Winx has had a day out to re-acquaint herself with the racetrack ahead of her scheduled return in the Apollo Stakes.

Winx worked over 1000m at Randwick on Saturday with Hugh Bowman increasing the tempo over the last 300m.

Trainer Chris Waller has earmarked next Saturday's Group Two Apollo Stakes (1400m) to kick off the mare's campaign aimed at the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes in April.

"She will have a gallop on Tuesday and that will confirm whether she starts in the Apollo," Waller said.

"That's where we want to go because it fits in best with her program. Otherwise we have to wait until the Millie Fox the following week.

"We did a similar thing before the Epsom and took her to the races before the Epsom to give her a day out.

"It gets rid of some of the nervous energy."

Waller said Winx he thought Winx was about 95 per cent fit which for a horse of her calibre would be enough for her first start.

"She is an extreme athlete," he said.

"She is about 10 to 15 kilos heavier than she was in the spring which is what we wanted to see.

"With some horses they take a run or two but a horse like her can go out there and just do it."

Winx hasn't been beaten since her second to Gust Of Wind on a soft track in the ATC Australian Oaks last April.

Her five starts since include the Queensland Oaks, the Epsom Handicap and the Cox Plate which she dominated to beat Criterion by 4-3/4 lengths.
