Everything fine with juvenile debutant

Friday 5 February 2016, 3:30pm

Three of Robert Heathcote's best stable performers dominate the open handicap at Doomben but his attention is also on debutant Damn Fine.

By Choisir out of the former Heathcote-trained Princess Qualo, is set to run in Saturday's Jim Beam 2YO (1200m).

"His dam Princess Qualo was very good but had a few issues including back problems," Heathcote said.

"She was a Sequalo filly who won a couple of handy city races and was good enough to run in races like the Magic Millions Three Year Old and Gold Coast Guineas."

He said Damn Fine had shown ability since joining his stable and he expected him to improve for Saturday's run.

Damn Fine is raced by his breeders, Canberra businessmen Sam Sergi and Jim Douros, who originally paid $220,000 for Princess Qualo at the Magic Millions sales.

The trainer will play a strong hand in the Sprite Open with Saluter, Jopa and Lauterbrunnen.

"Saluter needs a dry track and we scratched him from the Sunshine Coast Cup last week because of the heavy 10," Heathcote said.

"Jopa is honest wet or dry and he ran his usual good race when third at Doomben last week. They don't come much tougher."

"Lauterbrunnen was very good first-up when second over an unsuitable distance and he will be improved."
