Tarzino has easy trial at Geelong

Monday 1 February 2016, 5:05pm

Trainer Mick Price is convinced everything is on track for Tarzino's Australian Derby campaign despite the colt finishing at the tail of the field in a barrier trial at Geelong.

Monday's trials were switched from the turf to the synthetic track and Victoria Derby winner Tarzino went around at the back of a small field in his heat before picking up the tempo late and working to the line.

"I was happy," Price told racing.com.

"The thing is, he came out of the gates and there's a lot of kickback on this artificial surface where Craig (Newitt) said he resented it.

"I would have thought that's the first time that big colt in blinkers would have been subjected to that sort of thing, so he sort of put the brakes on the first furlong but it's not like we have to race on it.

"He was very strong through the line and I think the horse is going fantastic.

"I've had a few of these Derby horses coming into the autumn and I think he's the toughest I've had."

The C F Orr Stakes is the planned return for Tarzino before the Australian Guineas and a trip to Sydney for the Rosehill Guineas and Australian Derby.

"I think if he has a good trip to Sydney and the reverse way is no trouble for him and he settles in, I think you'll see the best of him in those two Sydney runs in the Rosehill Guineas and the Australian Derby in particular," Price said.
