Munce to defend his apprentice over ban

Monday 1 February 2016, 1:36pm

Trainer Chris Munce will vigorously defend his apprentice Michael Murphy in his appeal against a three-week suspension for a handling offence.

The former champion jockey said he would appear for Murphy to fight the ban.

Murphy is the up-and-coming apprentice on Queensland's provincial and country circuit having ridden 28 winners in his first season.

Stewards opened an inquiry into his ride on fourth placed Fast Focus in a race at Rockhampton on January 2.

The inquiry resumed on Friday and Murphy was found guilty of failing to put the horse in the best position to win or run a place.

Munce lodged an appeal on his behalf on Monday.

"I will fight this vigorously," Munce said.

"He is a young kid having his first rides at Rockhampton.

"It is a tricky track to ride for senior jockeys let alone a teenager.

"We will be appealing the guilty finding and the severity of the charge."

"I will probably appear for him although we might get a lawyer from Sydney."
