Big sprints on radar for The Quarterback

Tuesday 26 January 2016, 4:47pm

Robbie Griffiths is confident The Quarterback is on target for his defence of the Kensingston Stakes at Flemington as the trainer targets even bigger races for the sprinter.

The Quarterback resumes in Saturday's Listed Kensington Stakes trying to add to an already impressive record over the straight 1000m at Flemington.

The gelding has already netted three wins from five attempts over the course and distance including a Listed sprint during last year's Melbourne Cup carnival at his most recent start in November.

"He galloped well this morning and all is good," Griffiths said.

"He trialled super last week - he ran second in his trial - and I'm looking forward to Saturday. I reckon he's a super chance, with room for improvement also because we want to have a crack at the Oakleigh Plate and the Newmarket."

The Quarterback was among 70 nominations for the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) when they were released on Monday.

Griffiths is hoping the fast-finishing sprinter can take the next step this preparation to be competitive in the Group One handicaps.

"He looks like he's improved a bit, so we'll find out how he handles himself on Saturday," Griffiths said.

The Oakleigh Plate (1100m) is at Caulfield on February 27 with the Newmarket Handicap two weeks later.

Jockey Matthew Allen will continue his association with The Quarterback on Saturday.

The Kensington Stakes has attracted 18 nominations with The Quarterback topweight with 60kg.
