Kings Of Leon can hit right note for Smith

Thursday 14 January 2016, 2:54pm

Matthew Smith's hopes that Faraway Town could at least run a place behind Capitalist in the Magic Millions didn't come to fruition with the filly finishing sixth.

But the trainer's disappointment was soon offset when he realised she had claimed the bonus as the first female-owned horse home in last Saturday's race.

The $325,000 was not far off what she would have earned as runner-up and Smith came away happy.

"I bought a couple at the sale and they are now owned by women," Smith said.

While Faraway Town was up and running early in her two-year-old year, stablemate Kings Of Leon has taken a little longer to get to the races.

The colt makes his debut in Saturday's 2YO Plate (1100m) with Smith hopeful it is still not too soon for him.

"He is a really nice horse but he is still learning what it is all about," Smith said.

"He won his first trial but is still a bit wayward.

"He will be a lot better for the experience and is fit and ready after two trials.

"He is bred to be a good sprinter."

By Group One performer I Am Invincible out of sprinting mare Sexaz, Kings Of Leon is named for the band which had a No.1 hit with Sex On Fire.

As Kings Of Leon begins his career, Faraway Town will have a short break.

"I think she can get up to 1400 to 1600 metres so she will have a break now and could be back for the Brisbane winter," Smith said.
