An impressive finish from lightly raced Zuprising in a maiden at Sandown has provided Ballarat trainer Kylie Vella with her first city win.
Four-year-old Zuprising ($3.70 fav) made his winning run from back in the field in Wednesday's Grand Hotel Frankston Plate (1300m) at his third start and put his rivals away quickly to go on and score by 2-1/2 lengths.
"It's our first city winner. It's very exciting," Vella said.
"(Vella's husband) Steve has always had a really good opinion of this horse. It's just taken him a little while to put it together.
"He's a lovely big horse but he's just such a big baby."
Zuprising had finished second at both his previous two starts at Bendigo and Werribee earlier this month.
"Both starts we thought he would go really well. We just happened to run into a couple of handy horses," Vella said.
Jockey Dean Yendall believes Zuprising will keep progressing.
"He's a really nice young horse," Yendall said.
"He's still untapped."
Vella has six-year-old Zupacharged, a last-start placegetter at Flemington, in Friday's Group Three Standish Handicap.
Zupacharged is at $13 in early markets for the New Year's Day feature at Flemington.
