Japanese horses have already made a significant mark in Australia's biggest staying races and Tommy Berry is predicting an expansion of their reach.

The top Sydney jockey recently returned from a five-week riding stint in Japan where he booted home six winners.

He was taken by the depth in their racing ranks and said the experience was invaluable.

Berry said several Japanese owners and trainers expressed interest in bringing horses to Australia for the major carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne.

They have already enjoyed success with Delta Blues and Admire Rakti in the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups while Hana's Goal and Real Impact have taken out Group One races during autumn in Sydney.

But Berry is convinced the Japanese horses would figure just as prominently in Australia's best middle-distance races.

And he says their owners and trainers are starting to think that as well.

"They've always been worried about the Cox Plate because it's a tight track and it's 2000 metres, whereas their horses like big tracks and like to get over a bit of a trip," Berry said.

"But I think their good Group One milers, or even Group Two and Group Three milers, would suit our 2000 metre races, especially the Queen Elizabeth because they run their races at very good tempos.

"That sort of opened their eyes up a little bit about bringing horses to other races and not just the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups."

Berry enjoyed his time in Japan so much he is considering another trip at the end of the Sydney autumn carnival, although nothing has been confirmed.

He is hoping similar ventures will help him secure some plum rides aboard the Japanese raiders during future editions of The Championships and the major races in Melbourne.

"It's definitely in the pipe line," Berry said.

"If I can do a couple more trips back there over the next few years I think it will definitely cement some rides over the spring and autumn."
