Cradle Me surprises punters again

Saturday 26 December 2015, 5:22pm

For the second time in as many races, Cradle Me has surprised punters with a stakes win at Randwick.

On Saturday she even surprised her trainer David Pfieffer who was dismayed when the rain came and the track was downgraded to a soft (7).

After her win at $41 in the Listed Razor Sharp (1200m), Pfieffer identified the Canterbury Classic over the same distance as the ideal lead-up to the $1 million 1300m-race for fillies and mares at the Magic Millions day in two weeks on the Gold Coast.

Sent out at $13, Cradle Me's hopes didn't look too flash when she was with the tail-enders rounding the turn.

Pfieffer was even more concerned when Jason Collett steered her to the inside, but it proved to be the winning move as she went to the line three-quarters of a length in front of Dances On Stars ($21).

"I thought the wider the better on this track so I can't say what I was thinking when Jason went back to the fence," Pfieffer said.

"But he must have known how much horse he had underneath him.

"She's got some form on wet tracks but she is always stronger on top of the ground.

"I had picked this out as the perfect prep race for the Gold Coast but I wasn't confident when the rain came."

Collett lost confidence early in the week when Sydney experienced heavy rain.

With a couple of fine days, the track improved but the rain returned on Saturday.

"On Tuesday my book of rides didn't look great when the rain came," he said.

"This mare did a great job today. Her wet track form is OK but not great.

"But the Gold Coast will suit her where there's plenty of speed on."

Cradle Me cost $28,000 at the Magic Millions breeze-up sale and Saturday's win pushed her earnings past $500,000.

"She has been a great buy," Pfieffer said.

"I'm really looking forward to getting her to the Gold Coast."
