Apprentice Regan Bayliss has shown why he is so highly rated in Melbourne with a clever ride to win on Mr Lebrock at the Gold Coast.
Bayliss, the son of former Brisbane jockey Jamie Bayliss, is apprenticed to Peter Moody in Melbourne but has been riding for Mr Lebrock's owners, the Segenhoe Stud syndicate in Queensland this summer.
He won a race on Sugarparma at the Gold Coast for Segenhoe two weeks ago and continued in the same vein on Saturday when he took off at the 700 metres to sweep to the lead around the home turn in the 2200m-benchmark 75.
Bayliss is much travelled rode several winners durung a recent stint in Sydney.
Mr Lebrock ($6) won by 2-1/4 lengths from Scotty Be Gotti ($8.50) with a long neck to Alaktis ($41).
Bayliss said he had been able to get into a beautiful position from a wide barrier even though he was well back in the field.
"I knew I was on a good stayer so I wound him up and let him sweep around the field and he was far too strong," Bayliss said.
Mr Lebrock, who is by More Than Ready out of 2007 Magic Millions Classic winner Mimi Lebrock, had been unlucky at his previous two starts.
Trainer Toby Edmonds said Mr Lebrock would now probably go for a spell and come back for the winter carnival.
"He has done a good job this time and that win lifted his prize money past $112,000," he said.
