Sundance wins Listed Phelan Ready Stakes

Saturday 12 December 2015, 3:23pm

Gold Coast two-year-old Sundance took full advantage of a bias towards leaders and runners on the fence to win in the $100,000 Listed Phelan Ready Stakes on Saturday.

Constant drizzle settled on Doomben early on Saturday morning and the track was gradually downgraded to the soft range at the start of the race.

The previous three races were won by horses on the pace and on the fence, with Sundance ($2.70) going straight to the lead from barrier one.

Sundance, who was backed in from $4, led all the way to beat Par Oneri ($15), who was second throughout, by 4-3/4 lengths.

Trainer Toby Edmonds said Sundance would now go straight into the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 9 without another run.

"He might have a trial or a jump-out but he is in the Millions field now so I won't do too much," Edmonds said.

Edmonds said Sundance, a $140,000 Magic Millions buy, had always shown a lot of potential and he thought he would win his only other start when second at Doomben two weeks ago.

"Sundance is a pretty gross sort of horse and I thought I had him right for his only other run when he had won a trial leading into it. But he was one run short," Edmonds added .

He said he would chase Jeff Lloyd, who rode Sundance on Saturday, for the Millions ride.

Lloyd said he had an armchair ride after Sundance exploded out of the barriers to lead easily.

The favourite Punishing finished near the tail of the field after jockey Damian Browne was forced to go back to last from his wide barrier.

Browne said run was a waste of time as a Magic Millions pointer.
