Trainer considers stakes race for Grane

Saturday 28 November 2015, 5:56pm

Robbie Griffiths will consider backing up Grane into a stakes race after an impressive Moonee Valley win.

Griffiths has the Listed Doveton Stakes at Sandown next Saturday over Grane's pet distance of 1000m in mind for the six-year-old.

"He could back up next week depending on how he pulls up of course, otherwise we'll look for something else like this," Griffiths said.

Ridden by apprentice Jye McNeil, Grane ($6.50) came from just off midfield with a powerful finish to win the City Jeep Handicap on Saturday.

Griffiths said despite breathing issues that may require further surgery, Grane appreciated a step up in distance from 955m.

But he also pointed to a drop in weight as a winning formula.

With McNeil's 1.5kg claim, Grane came in with 53kg.

"He's a very consistent horse, always has a crack and he's got a great record around here," Griffiths said.

Griffiths said Grane had shown ability over extra ground as a younger horse before having throat surgery./
