Preferment pleases in Rosehill work-out

Saturday 28 November 2015, 3:29pm

All is in readiness for Preferment's trip to Hong Kong with trainer Chris Waller ticking the last box by giving him a pre-flight gallop at Rosehill.

Preferment was one of several horses inconvenienced in the Melbourne Cup earlier this month but showed he had come through well when he stretched his legs on his home track on Saturday.

Connections made the decision earlier this week to send Preferment to Hong Kong for the Vase (2400m) on International day on December 13.

The four-year-old worked with stablemate Rye over 1200m, coming home his last 600 in 37.60 seconds.

"He has a big task ahead and he needed to stretch his legs and also get used to race day again," Waller said.

""It's a long flight on Monday - nearly 14 hours.

"He is within range of his racing weight but will lose 10 kilos on the flight so he should be spot-on when he gets there.

"He is a bomb-proof horse and I'm sure he will have no trouble with the travel."

Although it has only been a few days since Preferment was confirmed as a Hong Kong starter, Waller said it wasn't an afterthought.

"Can he beat Winx in the Queen Elizabeth in the autumn?" he said.

"We have to pick out suitable options and this way he can come back and do his quarantine at Werribee.

"Then we will get him ready for the Chipping Norton first-up. After that he will run in the Australian Cup then come back to Sydney for the BMW."

Melbourne Cup runner-up Criterion and last-start Group Two winner Lucia Valentina will fly the Australian flag in the Hong Kong Cup (2000m).

Criterion, who finished third in the Hong King Cup last year, was given a work-out at Moonee Valley on Saturday with race jockey Craig Williams aboard.

Blake Shinn rode Preferment in his gallop but Hugh Bowman, who has taken up a short-term contract in Japan, will be aboard at Sha Tin.
