Sari a surprise packet for Simon Morrish

Friday 27 November 2015, 4:12pm

Simon Morrish had to be convinced Sari deserved a box in his stable.

A client purchased the daughter of Exceed And Excel as a potential broodmare but wanted to give her one last preparation.

Sari was raced by Darley in the care of Peter Snowden before being sold to Queensland where she was successful twice for Stuart Kendrick before losing form.

"I thought she was gone but we decided on one last throw at the stumps," Morrish said.

To offset training costs for the owner, Morrish rounded up a few mates and Sari found form, registering back-to-back wins at Murtoa and Bendigo before a placing at Geelong.

Sari finished eighth in mares' company at last week's Ballarat Cup meeting and on Saturday heads to the city for the first time under Morrish's care to contest the 1Print Handicap at Moonee Valley.

"I found a few blokes to lease her for free and the rest is history," Morrish said.

"I don't know where her level is and this is her highest rating she's had in her life.

"She's in good form, she's been lumping huge weights and this looks a pretty thin race."

Morrish said he made an error dropping Sari back from her placing at Geelong over 1400m to 1200m at Ballarat.

He said the 1500m of Saturday's race was something new for Sari because the mare is yet to race beyond 1400m.

"She's had a good week," Morrish said.

"She maps like she'll run 1500 metres and it's terrific prize money for an average horse.

"The boys are having an absolute ball and they've got a runner in town that they're really rapt about.

"I think with a little bit of luck in running she's some sort of chance."
