Chris Munce working towards goal

Sunday 22 November 2015, 1:04pm

Former champion jockey Chris Munce is well on the way to fulfilling his aim for his first year as a trainer.

Munce, part of an elite group of riders to win the "grand slam" of the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper, retired from the saddle in January and immediately took up training.

He set himself the task of being in the top 10 metropolitan trainers in Brisbane within the first year of his new profession.

Munce has had two impressive winners with Perplexity at Doomben and Stick With Me at the Sunshine Coast in recent days to take his tally of winners to 24 for his 10 months of training.

"Things are going along nicely but we have a way to go. We have a 16 per cent win rate and a 40 per cent place strike rate from 150 runners," Munce said.

Munce said he had a nice problem after Perplexity won his third race in a row in the Sky Racing Open (2200m).

"I love this horse. On his trackwork you wouldn't have two bob on him as he is so laid-back," he said.

"The option is there to go to Sydney for their Christmas time staying races but my preference is to keep him for races such as the Queensland Cup in our winter."

He said he would speak with the horse's owners and come up with a solution this week.

Stick With Me came from near last to win a restricted class race over 1000m at the Sunshine Coast on Friday night.

"Stick With Me has won two races for us and I have high hopes he can win in better company," Munce said.
